Stolen goods worth R2m recovered in Kempton Park

The recovered goods were handed back to the owners and the Isuzu truck was taken to the police pound.

Goods stolen from a truck that was hijacked on the R21 on Friday night, were recovered at two houses in Rhodesfield in Saturday morning.

Five suspects had also been arrested, said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the metro police.

The truck with two trailers laden with R2 million worth of stock comprising soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorants and shower gels en route to Botswana was hijacked by an unknown number of assailants on the R21 in the Irene area at 7pm.

On Saturday around 8am, EMPD SWAT team members with the assistance of the tracking system recovered the truck on the R25 in Bapsfontein at the Elandsfontein Agricultural Holdings with its cargo missing.

EMPD community liaison unit members, armed with information received from informants, tracked down some of the stolen cargo to two places in Rhodesfield.

The first stolen goods were recovered at a house on Lightning Street where three suspects were apprehended. While processing the scene on Lighting Street, one of the three arrestees pointed out an Isuzu truck driving past as the vehicle used to offload the loot from the hijacked truck.

“The Isuzu was chased and cornered whereupon huge quantities of the missing cargo was recovered. Two occupants of the Isuzu were arrested,” said Kgasago.

Other goods were recovered at a house on Mars Street, also in Rhodesfield. The recovered goods were handed back to the owners and the Isuzu truck was taken to the police pound at Van Ryn Deep in Benoni.

The five suspects, three Zimbabweans, one Malawian and one Nigerian, whose ages range between 26 and 36, were detained at Kempton Park Police Station on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.
