Sex work turned into an issue by Ladysmith residents

Residents have cited the alleged involvement of children in sex work as one of their reasons for concern.

Residents are complaining that the problem of sex work is “getting worse” in Ladysmith.

Concerned residents say they see many sex workers on Settlers Drive at night, prowling for business. The workers are also seen on Forbes Street every day, where they allegedly flash motorists to further entice would-be customers, Ladysmith Gazette reports.

As part of the first phase in a long-term crime prevention initiative, police and social workers from the department of social development swooped on Forbes Street on Friday, March 9, to address concerns by the public about underage prostitution.

A 17-year-old boy was one of those interviewed by police during the operation. The teenager was removed, and is being assisted in terms of the Child Care Act.

Other crime prevention operations have been planned in the same area in the near future.

People have expressed shock at the number of prostitutes who seem to be taking over Ladysmith, and have complained about young girls and boys being involved in sex work.

“This is really sad and something needs to be done about it, as children are involved in these activities,” said a concerned resident.

According to police, investigations are continuing regarding this matter.
