#ANC55 LIVE UPDATES: Mkhize vs Ramaphosa: Better the devil you know?

The elective conference started late on Friday due to load shedding and glitches with the ANC membership system.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is on Saturday expected to be voted in as ANC leader on the second day of the elective conference at Nasrec, Johannesburg.

Voting results for the ANC top six officials – president, deputy president, national chair, secretary-general, deputy secretary-general and treasurer-general – were expected to be announced late on Saturday evening. This now seem unlikely.

The conference, however started late on Friday due to load shedding and glitches with the ANC membership system.

It is not known whether the delays and disruptions will cascade further into the conference programme.

Tight security, singing delegates and a sea of the black, green and gold colours of the ANC were in evidence all over Johannesburg Expo Centre at Nasrec on Friday.

While the ambiance of the conference was one of excitement it was also surrounded by tension among the delegates.

In terms of excitement, delegates were fully draped in ANC regalia, along with ANC marshals dressed in the party’s vintage clothing, looking eager and ready for what lay ahead at the conference.
