This is why an ANC branch wants Motlanthe to return to the NEC

The former deputy president has not declined the nomination, but is not keen on a leadership position because he doesn't believe in 'recycling leaders'.

The Houghton ANC branch wants Motlanthe to be nominated and accept a position in the ruling party’s highest decision-making body between conferences, the national executive committee (NEC).

Their reasons are that he is wise and will impart this wisdom together with his skills and experience to the ANC. According to the Sowetan, the Houghton branch has nominated Cyril Ramaphosa for president, with Lindiwe Sisulu as his deputy.

Branch chairperson Stanley Letsoalo said Motlanthe was invited to a meeting he attended and participated in as an ordinary member. Though he did not address the meeting, Motlanthe did express his support for Ramaphosa.

“We said as much, as we are preaching unity, it is important for someone like Motlanthe, who can give us wisdom and who can share with incoming national executive committee members his experience because it will make or break the ANC,” said Letsoalo.
