About 10 young women “surprised” former higher education deputy minister and convicted woman beater Mduduzi Manana with a luncheon to express their gratitude to the ANC MP recently.
The girls were part of the programme by Manana’s foundation, which seeks to assist disadvantaged girls with funding to further their studies.
On October 20, they shared a table with the former deputy minister and had an opportunity to express their appreciation.
“We will forever appreciate you, and because you helped us, we will help others. As I close, I ask that the Almighty bless you. Once I’m done with my training, I’ll fly you to anywhere you want,” said one of the young women.
The Mduduzi Manana Foundation said the group of 10 young women were selected by the foundation in partnership with other stakeholders to study as pilots, IT specialists, maritime engineers and naval architects.
Manana resigned from his Cabinet post in August after he was charged with assaulting two women at a nightclub in Johannesburg after they allegedly called him gay.
He admitted to assaulting the two, apologised, and said he reacted that way following “extreme provocation”.
He was found guilty on three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court in September, and the matter was postponed to November for sentencing.
