The driver of a BMW was arrested after crashing into a Kia, claiming the life of the 24-year-old, during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that the incident took place around 03:31am at the intersection of Douglas Drive and Taylor Road in Douglasdale.
Unexpected crash
Preliminary reports have indicated that both vehicles were travelling north along Douglas Drive, with the white Kia Pegas travelling ahead of the blue BMW 320i.
It is alleged that the driver of the BMW collided with the rear of the Kia Pegas.
The impact caused the driver of the Kia to lose control and veer off the left side of the road, crashing into a private property boundary wall.
One Fatality
According to JMPD, the male driver of the BMW reported no injuries. However, the 24-year-old male driver of the Kia sustained fatal injuries resulting in his death on the scene of the accident.
His body was then transported to the Hillbrow State Mortuary.
Once the driver of the BMW was apprehended, tests revealed that he was under the influence.
Illegal alcohol limit
The breathalyser read 0.87mg/l, which is well above the legal limit of 0.24mg/l.
The driver was detained at Douglasdale South African Police Service (Saps) and faces charges for driving under the influence (DUI) and culpable homicide. He is expected to appear in court soon.
The JMPD has warned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Operating a vehicle while intoxicated poses a serious risk to public safety, and officers will continue to enforce a zero-tolerance stance on Johannesburg roads,” JMPD concluded.
Increased arrests
JMPD has arrested a total of 211 motorists for DUI over the last two weeks, showing that drunk driving continues to be a major factor in fatal road crashes, serious injuries, and reckless road behaviour.
Driving under the influence is a serious criminal offence that endangers not only the driver’s life, but also passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.
JMPD has urged all motorists to take personal responsibility, especially if you plan to consume alcohol. Motorists are encouraged to arrange alternative transportation, nominate a designated driver, or utilise e-hailing services.
