Large parts of the North Coast left powerless following Shakaskraal cable theft

The timeline for repairs is between 8am and 4pm, although work on site only began after 9.30am and it is unclear whether this will affect the end time.

An overnight robbery of copper cables at the Shakaskraal Substation has left many areas on the North Coast without power.

Residents of northern Ballito, Chaka’s Rock, Salt Rock, Tinley Manor, Sheffield, Shaka’s Head, Imbonini, Compensation, Umhlali, Shakaskraal, Glendale, Cranbrook, Riet Valley and Etete will all be switched off for most of the day today.

The Gezinga Substation will also be affected as a result, leaving Malende, New Grout, Thembeni, Dube Village and parts of Melville and Charlottedale in the same position.

The Shakaskraal Substation had to be shut down for emergency repairs and was slated to be offline from 8am-4pm, although work only began at around 9.30am and it is unclear whether this will impact the end time.

It is owned and operated by Eskom and therefore cannot be accessed by KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) repairmen.

There was some confusion at the substation when the Courier visited this morning, as planned maintenance was also being undertaken by Eskom workers.

This would not have affected the grid however, and is unrelated to the emergency repairs currently being made on site.

Police are investigating the theft.
