Comrades champion Gerda Steyn joins Dolphin Coast Striders for weekly time trial

Gerda and her husband, Duncan, joined more than 100 club members for the 5.30pm run and stayed on afterwards to meet fellow runners.

South African running icon Gerda Steyn delighted members of the Dolphin Coast Striders when she joined their weekly time trial last Thursday.

The Comrades Marathon record holder and reigning champion had been spotted training in Ballito and Salt Rock by club members, who contacted her and invited her to join the evening run. Striders stalwart and Comrades legend Barry Holland also crossed paths with her and personally extended an invitation.

“Despite her remarkable achievements, Gerda’s warmth, humility and generosity made the biggest impression,” said Striders marketing manager Nicola Muir.

“She happily posed for photographs, chatted with members and made time for everyone who wanted to meet her.”

Gerda also shared how much she enjoys running on the North Coast, praising the rolling hills, vibrant local running community and, with a smile, the famous coastal humidity that keeps even the best runners honest.

As a token of appreciation, the club presented her with a selection of Dolphin Coast Striders and Comrades-themed gifts.

“The highlight was a handcrafted shooter paddle, created by local artisan Allen Petrie of Greenhaus, engraved with the Comrades Marathon route, Gerda’s name and her record-breaking up-run time. She was genuinely thrilled with the unique keepsake,” said Muir.

The Dolphin Coast Striders host 4km and 8km time trials every Thursday, welcoming runners and walkers of all abilities.
