Mandeni maskandi artist makes waves in the music industry

The Mandeni resident recently released his second album, titled Lindiwe.

The son of the late maskandi legend Bhekumuzi Luthuli of Maphumulo is stepping out from his father’s shadow and becoming a popular musician in his own right.

Bhekumuzi was an multi-award winning artist who was known across Africa for his unique music, a mix of mbaqanga and maskandi.

His son Scelimpilo “Nxakanxaka” Luthuli (30) said being a musician brings out the best in him because music is the platform where he can best express his views and feelings.

“I am a very traditional person so this genre was the best for me. Should I have anything to say, I say it through music,” said Luthuli.

The Mandeni resident recently released his second album, titled Lindiwe.

The album’s lead song, of the same name is about an ex-girlfriend who broke up with him without giving him a reason.

“Whenever I think of her, it brings me to tears because I thought she was going to be my wife and the mother of my children,” said Luthuli.

Although he has only released two albums, Luthuli is already touring the country, in high demand at traditional events.

“I have been passionate about traditional music since I was in school.

“Being the son of a legendary musician has played a huge role in my career. I believe there are places where I have performed not because I am a young talented musician, but because of my father’s legacy.”

But Luthuli junior does not mind as it is his father’s memory that keeps him motivated, even in difficult times.

His only fear is that he would not live up to such a legacy, but it looks like this will soon be in his reach.
