North Coast street sweepers become community champions
Residents and the business community have complimented the Dolphin Coast Waste Management team on their sterling efforts.
Streets across North Coast towns are noticeably cleaner thanks to the collective efforts of a public-private partnership between Dolphin Coast Waste Management (DCWM) and the KwaDukuza municipality.
Armed with brooms and trash bags, 29 street sweepers are tending roads from Shakaskraal to Compensation, and towards Ballito and Salt Rock.
Managed by an all-women team mentored by DCWM, the squad of street sweepers has grown over the past few months since the initiative launched in August.
Labour is sourced locally from Shaka’s Head and Shakaskraal, with more than 34 jobs having been created since.
“We have been making a difference in many of the communities, but would like to take the initiative to the next level,” said contract manager, Tina Chamane.
She said they will be expanding their services to other areas this festive season when they see there is work to be done. While this falls outside the scope of their contractual agreement, the goal was to ensure the North Coast remains visually appealing as a tourist destination.
“We want to make sure that streets in the southern parts of KwaDukuza are some of the cleanest in South Africa.”
Residents and members of the business community have complimented the team on their sterling efforts.
Umhlali-based land owner, Carlos Mendes, extended his gratitude to DCWM.
“The team at Umhlali is a proactive, friendly and efficient group of individuals,” Mendes said.
Chaka’s Rock resident, Georgina Mackenzie, said she was pleased to note a neglected slipway leading to a car park had been transformed into an appealing area.
“I would like to give thanks and appreciation to the team who worked through difficult conditions and completed the task within two days,” she said.
This festive season, North Coast roads will continue to be swept clean, except for Christmas day and other public holidays.
