AFDA introduces new creative writing degree

The degree is one of the few fully-fledged undergraduate courses in this field on offer in South Africa.

AFDA, a private higher education institution that is registered and accredited by both the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the South-African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), is proud to announce the introduction of a Bachelor of Creative Writing degree at its Durban campus.

The latest qualification is in addition to AFDA’s higher certificates in film and performing arts, as well as the local and international award-winning Bachelor of Arts in Motion Picture and Bachelor of Arts in Live Performance degrees. The new creative writing degree integrates with the other creative disciplines in film, television, new media, live performance and music.

Delighted about the new qualification, AFDA Durban campus dean, Dr Janet van Eeden, said screenwriting had always been her biggest passion and she had taught it consistently throughout the years.

“I was also a freelance journalist and playwright for some 17 years before joining AFDA. Some of the best writers we have in South Africa have come through our screenwriting course in Durban,” she said.

The Bachelor of Creative Writing degree is one of the few fully-fledged undergraduate courses in this field on offer in South Africa, teaching story writing (fiction and nonfiction), screenwriting for film and TV (fiction and factual), playwriting and promotional writing.
