Eight arrested for murder in Tongaat

The police arrived to find the man lying on the ground naked

Eight people were arrested for murder after what appears to have been mob justice against a suspected criminal in Tongaat last Friday.

Tongaat SAPS spokesperson captain Patrick Ngwane said the police received a complaint last Friday about an accused criminal that had been caught in front of a house in the Burbreeze area.

The police arrived to find a naked man lying on the ground, surrounded by a group of people.

“He had injuries to his hip, head and back.

“The ambulance was called and the man was certified dead and the body was taken to Phoenix government mortuary for post-mortem to be held.”

A case of murder has been opened and eight people aged 20-45 years old were arrested.

The accused made their first appearance at the Verulam Magistrate Court this Monday and all eight were remanded in custody until Thursday, October 25.

“We appeal to our community not take the law into their own hands. We encourage people to join forces with the police by joining sector forums or participating in community policing forums,” said Ngwane.
