Two men killed and ten arrested in Maphumulo

Two men were shot and killed and ten men were arrested by police in Maphumulo on Sunday.

One of the men who was killed was wanted for killing a policeman in Gauteng earlier this year. A police firearm was also found next to the man’s body.

“The arrested men are aged between 18 and 29 and they were found in possession of two rifles and ammunition,” said KZN police spokesperson lieutenant colonel Thulani Zwane.

The men are suspected to have robbed teachers at Nomakhaladi High School in Kranskop on Saturday. Cellphones and money were taken from the teachers.

Zwane said the men were caught after the Kranskop community complained about their criminal activities.

“Police spotted a white Isuzu open bakkie with 12 occupants at Mambulu area. When police tried to stop the vehicle, the occupants fled towards Mphise area in Maphumulo.

“They also opened fire on police and a shootout ensued, resulting in two suspects aged 29 and 35 being killed.”

Charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition were laid against those arrested.

He said the arrests follow the recovery of seven firearms and the arrest of four people in in Maphumulo last week.
