The man accused of brutally cutting his ex girlfriend’s throat in the Ballito Junction shopping mall appeared in the Umhlali Magistrate’s Court last week.
The 30-year-old man who comes from Ntuzuma, south of Phoenix, was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody in Westville Prison until his next appearance on November 2.
Meanwhile, the family of the victim, Siphokazi Khumalo, gathered in the toilet in the Junction where she was killed to perform a cleansing ceremony last Friday.

In Zulu tradition when a loved one dies their family may perform a cleansing ceremony using a branch of “Umlahlankosi” or Buffalo Thorn tree. The branch will be taken from the tree and used to bring the person’s spirit home (ukubuyisa).
They will take the branch to the place where the person died and call his or her name, telling them to go home and not stay where they died. The ritual can vary according to the family’s custom.
Khumalo was killed two weeks ago when her ex followed her into a bathroom in the Ballito Junction and cut her throat, before calmly walking out and giving himself up.
The shocking killing left the Dolphin Coast community stunned and renewed calls for more to be done to curb the trend of violence against woman.
