A 50-year-old man has been charged with raping an 11-year-old child in Greylands, Tongaat.
Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Patrick Ngwane said the man entered the girl’s room last Sunday where he allegedly forced himself on her until he was interrupted by his wife.
“The victim resisted and made it difficult for the suspect to continue to rape her.
“The suspect’s wife then came into the room and the young girl explained everything to her and also told her that the suspect has raped her before.”
A police investigation revealed that the girl had, indeed, been raped by the man in the past.
Ngwane confirmed that the suspect had been charged with rape.
Tongaat station commander colonel Santha Moodley raised concerns about the high number of rape and assault cases reported at SAPS Tongaat.
She warned parents to ensure that children are not left alone at home.
“During this season there are many people who abuse alcohol. When they are drunk they become aggressive and commit serious crimes such as rape and assault.
“Police will be deployed on the road to ensure that festive season goes safely,” said Ngwane.
