Alleged matric Rage rape

This is the second reported case of rape after another Rage partygoer was allegedly raped at a hotel in Umhlanga.

A case of rape that allegedly took place during the Matric Rage festival in Umhlanga was opened at the Umhali police station last week. Umhali SAPS captain Vinny Pillay said an 18-year-old teenager had booked into Ballito to attend the festival with her friends.

She reported that her drink had been spiked at the party in Umhlanga and alleges that the rape took place in the tent where the festival was held.

“The young girl does not recall anything and it is believed that her drink may have been spiked while she was dancing with her friends on Monday, December 4.

“When she woke up the next morning she felt that something was wrong. A medical examination found bruising on her private parts.

“The case was opened last Wednesday and her mother flew down from Johannesburg to be with her.”

The Rage festival saw thousands of newly matriculated teenagers flock to Ballito and Umhlanga in celebration of their new freedom.

This is the second reported case of rape after another Rage partygoer was allegedly raped at a hotel in Umhlanga.

However, Rage festival spokesperson Darren Sandras said the organisers were not aware of the second rape incident.

“We have strict safety measures in place and about 500 community and policing staff. We were not informed of the second incident.”

Pillay said the case was handed over to Durban North SAPS for further investigation.
