Police are now reportedly using rubber bullets and tear gas, as protesters are refusing to disperse.

According to a resident of the Ekhalafukwe informal settlement in Etete, Njabulo Miya, the trouble started after they had been addressed by KDM officials and a date for a public meeting was set for Sunday.

“We are tired of holding meetings with the officials, they always call for meetings and nothing comes out of it. Police are now using rubber bullet and tear gas to disperse us. We want to keep the road blocked until the mayor arrives,” said Miya.

They have been blocking the R102 with burning tyres since this morning, saying that they are fed up with the slow progress of a housing project, unemployment and their councillor Promise Dube.

The road is still closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes to Stanger or Ballito.
