Dolphin Coast taxi owner and wife killed in drive-by shooting

Fears of resurgent taxi-violence on the North Coast.

In the second such attack on a Dolphin Coast Taxi Association (DCTA) member this week, a man and his wife were killed last night (Saturday) in a drive-by style shooting.

According to Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay, taxi owner Dicky Govender and his wife were driving from Shakaskraal to Tongaat on the R102 at about 9pm last night.

As they neared Frasers, an unknown vehicle overtook them and opened fire on the couple, killing Govender and seriously wounding his wife. She later passed away in Victoria Hospital.

“There were 15 rounds found in the body of the car, both 9mm and high calibre,” Pillay told the Courier.

“The attackers did not steal anything, merely opened fire and sped away.”

A case of murder has been opened at Tongaat SAPS.

This follows another attack on Tuesday, when DCTA member Nhlahla Laphelo was walking home towards Sheffield Manor along the Flag Animal Farm road shortly after 8am in the morning.

According to IPSS Electronic Security, an unknown number of men pulled up in a white Audi and began shooting. Laphelo returned fire and the Audi sped off, leaving him shaken but unhurt.

DCTA spokesperson Sunshine Mthiyane said they were shocked and concerned by these attacks.

“We are not sure of the exact cause for these shootings, but both men are committee members,” Mthiyane said.

“There are fears that someone has a plan to shoot the whole committee.”

According to Mthiyane, Govender was the founder of the DCTA and a widely loved figure in the taxi community.

“I cannot understand how someone could do this, Dicky Govender was a good, humble man who never fought with anyone.

“He was always ready to help – when you needed something he was there for you. Many of the members got their taxis from him.”

Mthiyane expressed the DCTA’s sincerest condolences to the Govender family, saying they would be in their prayers.
