Tongaat’s central business district came to a standstill today when a taxi driver was gunned down on Gopalall Hurbans Road.
Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson, Prem Balram said the man had been shot multiple times shortly before 2pm.
Paramedics had declared him dead at the scene.
“Several spent high caliber cartridges were recovered,” he said.
Balram said the taxi driver had gone to a mechanic to have one of his cars repaired when the shooting took place.
The men who opened fire are said to have fled in a white VW Polo, heading in the direction of Emona.
There were at least 3 owner taxi related murders in the Tongaat area last year.
More recently one man was killed and 2 others were critically injured in a taxi related drive-by shooting in Umdloti in December last year.
Provincial Saps had not responded at the time of publication.
