N2 shoot-out leads to three arrests and one death following ‘robbery spree’ investigation

The 'Mercedes-Benz gang' had allegedly been involved in a spate of robberies across the province.

A shoot-out between police, security services and an alleged gang of robbers brought the N2 near KwaDukuza to a standstill yesterday.

The shoot-out took place near the KwaDukuza offramp at around 2.30pm and led to three arrests, while the fourth alleged robber was killed.

It is understood that no police or security officers were seriously injured.

According to the Fidelity Specialised Intervention Unit, who were part of the investigation, the “Mercedes-Benz gang” had been involved in a spate of robberies around the province.

After the suspect’s car – a grey Mercedes-Benz – was spotted near KwaDukuza, a multi-disciplinary operation was launched.

Led by provincial Saps, the teams involved included SAPS KZN CI MDOC, Saps Durban NIU, Saps Durban K9, Saps Sydenham Trio, Blue Security, Ithemba Security and Fidelity.

“The above units proceeded on the N2 towards KwaDukuza where the suspect’s vehicle was spotted and intercepted,” said Fidelity SIU.

“Three suspects were arrested, and one fatally wounded, after a shoot-out ensued between the suspects and operational members.”

The car was seized, alongside tools for housebreaking, unlicensed guns and ammunition.

Saps KZN did not return a request for comment.
