Good budget administration by the KwaDukuza municipality’s (KDM) civil engineering unit has seen an extra reward of R7-million in national funding.
This was revealed in council last week where a second adjustment budget was tabled to reflect the positive changes.
Typically, only a mid-year adjustment budget is delivered from which councillors can take stock of financial performances and budgetary changes and make allocations as needed.
“The MIG aims to eradicate municipal infrastructure backlogs in poor communities to ensure the provision of basic services such as water, sanitation, roads and community lighting,” reads the Cogta website.
The news was welcomed by councillors, who praised civil engineering executive director Muzi Sithole for using his budget effectively.
“Of course we are happy to see an increase in funding streams for the department and would like to see it reflected in our communities,” said Independent Alliance councillor, Ebrahim Kolia.
All of the funds have already been allocated to road rehabilitation projects to ensure that the budget is efficiently used in this budget cycle.
R2-million will be used for roads in ward 10 (Shela Road), ward 11 (Palm Land Road) and ward 16 (Hibiscus, Bauhinia and Hill Crescent Road), with the remaining R1-million going towards Nkwazi Road in ward 3.
“At this point we are at 80% expenditure and are confident we will reach 100% in the final quarter of this year,” said Sithole.
The extra funds have seen the capital budget of KDM increase to R316-million after it was dropped from R321-million to R310-million in the mid-year adjustment in February
