KwaDukuza powers Etete and Groutville with new R71-million power sub-station

The funding for the project came from both National Treasury, which allocated R26-million, and the KwaDukuza council, which contributed an additional R45-million.

The R65-million General Gizenga Mpanza high capacity power sub-station in Groutville has been completed and switched on to address electricity issues in Etete and Groutville.

KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca said National Treasury had allocated R26-million towards the project, with the KwaDukuza council contributing a further R45-million.

This substantial investment will enhance the electricity supply to several areas.

Communities in eThembeni, Dube Village, Groutville Mission, Charlottedale, Umfolozi FET and Malende will benefit from the upgraded electricity infrastructure.

Since the start of the project in 2021, it has generated more than 45 employment opportunities in the area.

The eight sub-contractors involved in the project providing services ranging from site security, bricklaying, civil work, plant hire and electrical installation, further stimulated the local economy.

The station was named in honour of Mpanza, a revered figure in the liberation struggle and a native of Groutville.
