A Glenhills father says his family has been left traumatised after he and his wife were allegedly deliberately hit by a car in front of their children.

Nathan Naidu and his wife, Verosha, were injured on Uranus Drive in KwaDukuza last Friday after Nathan said he confronted a group for spinning a car near schoolchildren walking home.

During the confrontation, one of the occupants allegedly pointed a gun at Nathan.

CCTV footage seen by the Courier shows a black VW Citi Golf later driving towards people near a school gate.

Several narrowly escape before the car appears to strike two victims, one of whom is flung onto the windscreen before falling from the bonnet onto the pavement. The Golf then speeds away while people run after it.

Photos taken afterwards show the car with a shattered windscreen and damage to the bonnet, rear bumper and a door.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick confirmed paramedics treated the couple for injuries consistent with being hit by a car, before they were taken to General Justice Gizenga Mpanza Regional Hospital.

Nathan said the car drove at them after he asked Verosha to take a photo following the initial confrontation.

“Three of my daughters (aged 12, 13 and 18) saw us being hit and they are now scared to go to school,” said Nathan.

He said Verosha had to have her ring finger amputated and also suffered injuries to her leg, back and head, while he is dealing with a head injury.

For the father of five, the physical injuries have also brought financial worries.

“This has affected us so badly. I am the sole provider for my family and I have five children, with the youngest in Grade R. With me injured, I cannot work. We hope justice will be served,” he said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson captain Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed four males, aged 14, 16, 16 and 20, were arrested. Only the case against the 14-year-old was enrolled, however.

The teenager, understood to have been driving, appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday on six charges, including two counts of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving, driving without a licence, unauthorised use of a vehicle and pointing a firearm.

The matter was referred to the Child Justice Court and postponed to October 2. The teenager was released into the care of a guardian.
