Car pile-up kills three

Three people have died, two of them children aged between one and two-years-old, after a taxi and two cars collided on the M4 between Umhlanga and Umdloti yesterday afternoon at 4.45pm.

According to Netcare media liaison Chris Botha, paramedics arrived at the scene and found a car down an embankment on the north bound lane with the driver still trapped in the wreckage. A taxi was found down an embankment on the south bound lane with the right hand side of the taxi ripped off. The third vehicle was found facing north on the south bound lane.

They then found that an adult man and a child, aged two, had died before their arrival.

Another child, aged one, was in a critical condition and paramedics worked fervently to resuscitate her, tragically though she died on scene due to her extensive injuries.

A critically injured man was airlifted to the Nkosi Albert Luthuli hospital while the critically injured driver from one of the cars was transported by ambulance to a Netcare hospital in Durban. Two seriously injured people were stabilised on scene and then transported to a local hospital.

Exact detail to the cause of the accident will remain a subject for police comment.
