Ilembe makes good on its promise

Municipality on schedule with infrastructure overhaul.

Stanger Manor residents are smiling after the Ilembe district municipality officially launched a promised water project in their area.

Construction on the R60m current phase of the KwaDukuza pipe replacement got underway in Stanger Manor on Monday.

The municipality announced a complete overhaul of their water infrastructure in February this year (‘We are starting over – Ilembe’, Courier, February 14).

The project begins with pipe replacements in wards three (Zinkwazi), 17 (Stanger Manor and High Ridge) and 16 (Stanger Heights).

SBT Civils has been appointed to run all three contracts concurrently.

Ilembe acting technical services director Notha Maphumulo and infrastructure and technical committee chairman councillor Jabulani Zondo met with the project managers and contractors last week.

The site office will be located opposite the Engen garage in Stanger Manor.

With the help of the councillors and the appointed public steering committees 90 people have been employed to date.

“The procurement process for the Blythedale project is underway. Once the contractor is appointed, work will subsequently begin. It is important to let our people know that during construction, water interruptions should be expected but will be kept at a minimum, for not more than five hours and notice will be given 48 hours prior to cut offs,” said Zondo.

The existing pipes will be replaced with PVC pipes (50mm 350mm) with installation of new pipe fittings and specials including PRV’s, isolating valves, air valves, scour valves, chambers, valve markers and fire hydrants.

R14,2m has been allocated for Zinkwazi and the same for High Ridge, while R32,2m has been allocated for Stanger Heights and Glenhills respectively.
