MEC calls for education turnaround

School principals urged to develop strategies to improve matric results.

The MEC for arts, culture, sport and recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha is urging all school principals whose schools obtained 0% in the Ilembe District to develop turnaround strategies for their schools for this year.

She was addressing education stakeholders gathered at Mandeni during her visit to the schools in the region.

She was visiting local schools from Wednesday January 21 to Friday January 23.

“Local councillors must prioritise education in their wards. They should make education an agenda item in their meetings at all material times,” said Sibhidla-Saphetha.

Sibhidla-Saphetha is the champion for Operation Sukuma Sakhe in the region.

Some of the schools that got 0% pass rate for their 2014 matric are Gcinokuhle High School and Manzini High School.

In Ilembe 9740 pupils sat for examination, 3249 failed and the overall matric pass rate was 59.20%.

The number of female pupils who passed matric was higher than male pupils. Among the observations made by the education department include the fact that urban districts performed better than rural districts.

In 2013, the matric pass rate in the district stood at 72.46%.

KwaDukuza was top of the list of schools that performed well followed by Umhlali and Stanger schools.

The overall pass rate for maths and science was 25% and 45%.
