KwaDukuza police launch road safety operation ahead of Easter
Zero tolerance from KwaDukuza police when it comes to road transgressions.
KwaDukuza Traffic and Crime Prevention officers launched Operation Vimbingozi this week aimed at promoting safety habits in public roads in a bid to curb road fatalities ahead of the Easter holiday season.
After a two hour blitz conducted by KwaDukuza SAPS as part of this new operation, 60 drivers were charged for different road transgressions on Wednesday, February 18.
A report discussed at the launch details the offences that were recorded.
Four vehicles were found in an unroadworthy state and have since been suspended.
A total of 60 violations were recorded of which eight relate to ignorance and transgressions of road signs or markings, including Stop street violations and unlawful overtaking on painted islands.
Eight drivers were found without valid drivers licenses.
Another driver was arrested for driving a vehicle which did not match up to the vehicle and registration plate.
Six vehicles were found without valid registration discs.
Following the launch of Operation Vimbingozi, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu has warned those who continue to disregard the rules of the road will be caught by the police.
“It is unfortunate that these violations happen in public spaces where the law has to be upheld without reservations, be it minor or serious, all violations have serious consequences. Unlawful overtaking, driving without a valid drivers license and driving beyond the speed limit are serious offences with serious consequences, we don’t tolerate such behaviour in our roads. The record of 60 cases is an achievement that will relatively contribute to the decline of fatalities on KwaDukuza roads this season. We will intensify our efforts in the run up to the Easter season as we no longer want any fatalities on our road”, said Mthembu.
