Ballito Hawks protest drugs

Community members oppose suspect's application for bail.

A small cohort of individuals from the Ballito Hawks swooped onto the grounds of Umhlali police station this morning to protest an arrested drug dealer’s request for bail.

The dealer in question, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on Friday, June 19 for allegedly selling one gram of cocaine in the parking lot at the Ballito Bay Mall.

The 40-year-old male suspect was in possession of R800 believed to have been made through the sale of drugs, with an additional four grams of ‘cat’ (a form of methamphetamine) discovered at his residence in Etete after a further search by officers.

He was in custody for almost three weeks at Umhlali police station and can now apply for bail, which the Hawks and a handful of angry community members strictly oppose.

“We are sick of all the drugs in our town and wanted to rally the community of Ballito to protest the bail of this individual,” said Daniel van Wyngaardt of the Ballito Hawks, who together with the community, wants to send a clear message to authorities that bail should not be granted to drug dealers.
