Ballito duiker recovering at vet

Duiker is doing better but kept at vet for observation.

The duiker that was stoned and kicked by construction workers, is doing better, but has not eaten much since Monday morning.

Ballito Veterinary Hospital’s Dr Kevin Stevens treated the young ram for injuries around the head and a ripped bottom lip.

“The bottom jaw bone is visible through the wound,” said Stevens.

He said the duiker’s jaw was swollen and bruised but luckily not broken.

“The little duiker has not yet eaten much, probably because its jaw is still too sore,” said Stevens.

He also urged people who came across injured wild animals not to keep them as pets but to have them treated and released back into the wild.

“It is illegal to keep a wild animal without a permit,” he said.

As soon as the vet is satisfied with the duiker’s condition he will be released back into the wild.
