Weekend crime report

Two cases of attempted murder in Shaka's Head.

Umhlali SAPS were called out to a number of crime scenes last weekend, with all incidents taking place on a very busy Saturday for police officers.

Of the 34 crimes committed on Saturday, August 8, 18 are serious offenses currently under investigation.

At 9am on Saturday morning, an aggravated assault took place in Nkobongo after a fight broke out between two men, which resulted in one being stabbed. The injured man was taken to Stanger Hospital for treatment.

A teenage girl was allegedly the victim of sexual assault at 7pm on Saturday evening as she was walking home near Guzane School in Shayamoya. The girl was accompanied by an older man, who allegedly sexually proposed to her, and after she refused, she was pushed onto the ground where she received injuries to her face. The man then forced the girl to accompany him to his house, where he undressed her. The case is still under investigation.

At 8pm and then again at 8.30pm, there were two cases of attempted murder in Shaka’s Head. The first incident took place when an on-duty police sergeant received information that two males in a grey Suzuki were carrying a firearm. The officer requested the vehicle to pull-over, when a man in the back of the car opened the window and fired two shots towards to the officer. After a brief exchange of fire, the men were arrested.

The second incident happened just half an hour later near Mamas Tavern in Shaka’s Head, where a woman alleged that three men in a silver vehicle told her to get inside the car. She refused and after her boyfriend intervened, one of the men took out his firearm and threatened to shoot him. The couple ran away as the suspects fired shots at them.

At 8pm on Saturday evening a theft occurred outside the Upper Deck restaurant in Ballito. A man parked his white Nissan Quashqai and when he returned to his vehicle, noticed that the window had been smashed and his laptop, iPad and Macbook Air had been stolen, worth a total value of about R50 000.
