Butchery burns in Umhlali

The Old Thompsons butchery in Umhlali caught alight.

A small butchery in Umhlali caught alight on Monday evening, August 17, with residents and passing motorists alerting the authorities just before 7pm.

Quentin Power of SRU said that KwaDukuza fire department was contained in the front section of the butchery, with all of the damage concentrated at the entrance, as well as inside the shop.

“The fire department had to cut through the steel security doors of the shop in order to begin fighting the fire,” said Power, who added that although the structure of the building was largely unaffected by the flames, all contents of the shop were completely destroyed.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

The attending authorities are still looking for the owner of the building, who they have been unable to contact since the incident took place.

Former owner of the building, Trevor Thompson, said that he is also unaware of the building’s new owners.
