Old scam, new victim

Pensioner who was conned hope to warn others.

An 82-year-old Ballito resident fell victim to an old scam where pensioners are offered discounted rates for water and electricity, similar to the Eskom scam.

Maria Popao was conned out of R1200 on Wednesday after a so called Leon Moodley dropped by her house.

Popao said the man was very well spoken and said he was from KwaDukuza municipality.

“I asked him how much the meter would cost and he said R5 200. He said we had to pay a deposit on the spot and then the balance when a surveyor came and installed the new meter the following week.”

She gave him R1200, which was all the cash she had on her at the time.

“As he walked down the stairs to the driveway, I overheard him on his cellphone, saying that he got R1 200. At that moment I knew I had been conned!”

Popao immediately called KwaDukuza municipality who said that they did not have anybody by the name of Leon Moodley working for them.
