Ballito Helping Hands assist families
Overwhelming support from community for families who was affected by Shaka's Head accident.
After the death of 16 people in the horror train and taxi accident at Shaka’s Head, Jessica Galloway from Ballito knew she had to help the families.
“As a mom of two young children, I can not imagine what would happen to my children if anything were to happen to my husband or myself,” said Galloway after she heard about the accident.
“I felt compelled to do what I could, albeit small, for the victim’s families. I did not expect the community to react the as they have.”
Galloway started a Facebook page called Ballito Helping Hands and asked the community for donations that could assist the families in their time of need.
“I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of donations, calls of support and volunteers. All I did was post a comment on the Meet My Neighbour Ballito Facebook page, and the rest was done by the community,” she said.
Soon the page was flooded with people commenting on what they could do to help.
“We actually have received so many donations, we are still sorting everything out and at the moment we have enough. However, once we distribute this batch we will need more non-perishable food items, nappies, formula and children’s essentials and toys,” said Galloway.
The drop off points for these donations are the Ballito Library, IPSS Medical Rescue in Salt Rock, Mersat and the Simbithi Homeowners Association.
You can also donate to the support fund set up by the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce.
