Shots fired at Shaka Day celebrations

The warriors responsible were allegedly from Hostel 17 in Umlazi

Panic ensued at the King Shaka Day celebration in KwaDukuza yesterday when “abamabutho” warriors fired numerous shots into the air upon their arrival and in Cato Street as they were leaving later that day.

On both occasions people dived for cover assuming the worst and people were seen running into the nearby shops.

The young men were reportedly from Hostel 17 in Umlazi. No one was injured and the celebrations continued unhindered.

Thousands of people from across the province had descended on the KwaDukuza Recreation Grounds for the Heritage Day celebrations.

Currently the province is facing a problem of violence in hostels in Durban, especially KwaMashu and Glebeland.

His Majesty Goodwill Zwelithini, announced that he will be visiting hostels to address this issue.

“By next week I will visit the hostels to find out what going on. It is clear that politicians have failed to deal with this matter,” said King Zwelithini.

The KwaDukuza and Ilembe Municipalities, as well as the Zulu Royal Household hosted the successful event, in partnership with the Office of the Premier and the KZN Department of Arts and Culture.

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu, MEC Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, Sibongiseni Dhlomo and Weziwe Thusi were also among the attendees at the event.
