PJ Davies, owner of Naked Bones mobile catering business, makes people salivate wherever he goes – driving his food truck from gig to gig to fill the region’s growing appetite for gourmet chicken.
Davies’ business finished third in this year’s Ilembe Chamber’s Entrepreneur competition for the originality of his business and the high quality of his secret family recipes. Now he is taking Naked Bones as far and wide as he dares to go.
“I wanted to get into the food industry for a long time and having read about food trucks in Johannesburg and Cape Town, I was inspired to launch my own here in KZN. I have not looked back,” said Davies, whose business now caters for events ranging from Splashy Fen music festival and the Deloitte Challenge to the I Heart Market and the Loerie Awards.
“My dad was renowned for his peri-peri chicken, so I figured that chicken could also become my ‘thing’. I have been cooking peri-peri chicken for friends and family for many years now and when they eat my chicken, there is nothing left but bones,” said Davies.
This is how the name ‘Naked Bones’ evolved and allowed him to develop a “cheeky menu” to match.
When asked what his dreams are for his business, the fired up chicken specialist expressed his desire to start a “food truck revolution” through a three-pronged business that caters for all kinds of people through a product-line sold for home use, kiosks where people can enjoy their food, and food trucks on Durban and North Coast beaches.
“In the short term, we are looking to grow our pre-pack side of the business by launching an online ordering system. Our pre-pack products have been received very well by the market. Our next goal is to find a fixed location from where we can trade,” said Davies.
In December and January, Naked Bones will be operating from Burnedale, in Salt Rock on most weekends.
Davies said his experience in the Entrepreneur competition gave him the tools he needed to run a successful business and the insight required to take Naked Bones to the next level.
“I am very proud to have finished third and this has given me the confidence boost I needed. When I entered Naked Bones, I was looking for a mentor and to network with other entrepreneurs facing the same challenges as myself.”
Davies’ Naked Bones vacuum-packed chicken are available to buy at Home Grown, at the Litchi Orchard and he encourages everyone to try his unique array of popular flavours.
