Doggylicious outing

Starting the day with a walk on the beach, followed by a hungry pup quarter pounder and a milk draught is every four paws’ dream.

Owner of Ballito’s The Galley Beach Bar and Grill, Mark van Staden is making doggy dreams come true with a canine menu that will make every dog’s tail wag with joy.

“My wife, Jen and I are serious dog lovers. About three years ago, a customer asked us if their dog could join them on the deck and we thought, why not?”

Seeing what a pleasant experience it was for the customer and the dog, the Van Stadens started doing some research.

“We found that many restaurants are pet friendly and decided to join the club,” he said.

They put together a canine cuisine menu offering paw-some snacks, a pooch breakfast and the delicious hound dog heaven bowl.

“The response has been fantastic, in fact we often serve more doggy meals over weekends than kiddies meals.”

Dog owners love it too.

“We have had a dog birthday party with eight dogs including a bone shaped cake as well as an engagement party for a little thoroughbred couple.”

The canine customers are seen eating the Chicken A La Pooch or sipping on a Thirsty on the deck with their families, as the inside is strictly for humans.

“We have a few regulars, who come to the office and wait for their special treats, which my wife bakes,” said Van Staden with a chuckle.

The Galley is not the only pet friendly restaurant in town, as Milk Cafe, just up the road, is the perfect spot for pet lovers with a sweet tooth.

While you enjoy a pancake or sip on a milkshake, your pooch can nibble on some special doggy peanut butter treats.
