“More speed humps to come” – councillor

In response to the community outcry after 76-year-old Wynand Marais was killed while crossing the R102 in Shakaskraal on November 4, the KZN Transport department placed a single speed hump just after the Shakaskraal SA Primary school turnoff, however residents say this is not nearly enough.

Businessman Sunil Samraj said the transport department should at least add four more speed humps.

“The cars are still travelling at high speed and the road is dangerous. I hope that they are still coming back to put more speed humps,” said Samraj.

The placement of the speed hump is also not correct as is too far from where people usually cross the road when going to the shops or to catch a taxi.

However, Shayamoya councillor John Phahla said residents must calm down because there are three more speed humps on the way.

“I was told by DoT that they will be back to add more speed humps and markings for pedestrian crossings,” said Phahla.

The Shakaskraal community has for many years complained about the behaviour of drivers and the high number of vehicle accidents on the R102.

The road is heavily used by pedestrians, particularly residents of Shayamoya Township and school pupils.

They cross the road daily to buy electricity from S E Manga and Sons store, or to catch a taxi.

There are currently no pedestrian crossing areas or road signs warning of school children and pedestrians crossing.
