Car plunges 80 metres down bridge on N2 near Zinkwazi

Rescue workers abseiled 80 metres down the bridge to get to the wreckage.

Rescue workers had to abseil about 80 metres down a bridge on the N2 near Zinkwazi to free a critically injured man from his car after it plunged into the Zinkwazi River early on Monday morning, December 28.

“The car was travelling on the N2 towards Mandeni when it veered across the southbound lanes and went off the side of the Zinkwazi River bridge.  It appears the car hit a small ledge which launched it into the air for about 30 metres before the car hit several trees and rolled a further 50 metres down a steep embankment and landed on its roof,”said Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue.

Herbst said the man, critically injured with part of his hand amputated, was still trapped inside the car when rescue workers arrived to try and free him from the wreckage.

KwaDukuza fire department cleared a path so that the man could be carried up the side of the embankment and be treated by advanced life support paramedics.

The N2 southbound was closed for about 30 minutes to allow the Air Mercy Service (AMS) helicopter to land and airlift the patient to Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban.

The road is now open in both directions.
