Hoax weather message circulating on social media
There is no official heatwave warning.
A message alerting people of an “eminent unprecedented heatwave” has been circulating on social media channels like WhatsApp, with high temperatures being experienced across the country.
The message states that it is a press release from the Department of Meteorological Services, advising the public of the heat wave expected for Thursday and Friday, with temperatures reaching up to 43 degrees.
The South African Weather Service’s KZN forecasting centre at King Shaka International Airport confirmed that the message is not true.
“There is no Department of Meteorological Services and the message is indeed false,” said the SA Weather Service’s Aslam Sardiwalla.
“There is no heatwave at the moment. We are experiencing typical hot and humid conditions on the East Coast of South Africa, but there is no actual heatwave at play,” said Sardiwalla.
