Taxi crashes into toll plaza, 17 injured
Two passengers had lower limbs amputated in the crash.
Two people were rushed to hospital in a critical condition and 15 others with minor to moderate injuries after a taxi crashed into the Umvoti toll plaza on the N2 outside Thembeni, Groutville earlier this evening.
Four lanes at the toll plaza were obstructed at around 6pm when, in the pouring rain, the northbound taxi lost control and collided with the toll booth.
IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Paul Herbst said that some of the passengers said they believed the taxi’s brakes had failed.
“The two passengers in the front of the taxi sustained critical injuries with lower limb amputations,” said Herbst.
The cause of the accident will be subject to a police investigation.
