New Umhlali police head will work with community

Umhlali police station is under new command and their iron lady’s motto is success through strong relationships.

Colonel K.N. Makhathini has been with the police for more than 20 years and said being a policewoman is her life.

“I am a South African. I love this country and the people. Being part of the police, means I can help in securing peace and stability for everyone within our borders,” said Makhathini, who has always worked in KZN and lives on the North Coast.

Before joining Umhlali, she was second-in-command at the Verulam station and in Inanda before that.

“Being a policewoman means meeting different people all the time – rich, poor, young, old – everyone is our client. Everyday is exciting and challenging.”

Colonel Makhathini said when she saw the station commander position advertised, she grabbed the opportunity, applied, went through the interviews and was honoured to be given the position.

She said Umhlali is a “good police station with good members”, but without strong relationships with the community, they cannot win.

“We need to all work together. Everyone in the community has to feel comfortable to come to us and tell us what is happening, so that we can help them. Criminals live among the community, so if they do not tell us and help us find them, we cannot help them.”
