Sappi injects half a million into education

Sappi invited some of Protec’s brightest stars on the North Coast to attend a lunch in their honour recently for excellence in mathematics and science at matric level.

Held at the Palm Dunes Hotel in Blythedale last Thursday, January 21, three matriculants from the Protec Mandeni branch and three from the Stanger branch were celebrated for their academic success after they each achieved distinctions in both mathematics and physical science during the 2015 exams.

As a result, they were each awarded R20 000 by Sappi – R10 000 per subject distinction. The money is to be used for further tertiary studies of their choice at either a department of higher education training (DHET) recognised university or a university of technology.

Sappi has been supporting Protec, a programme for the advancement of technological careers, since 1995 and back in 2014, the corporation introduced a financial incentive for the programme by offering a R10 000 award to those achieving distinctions in maths and science in their matric exams.

This year yielded the best results since the programme was introduced with a total of 50 distinctions earned in these two subjects by matric pupils from the Sappi-supported Protec branches at Mandeni, Stanger, Umkomaas, Pietermaritzburg and Nelspruit.

A total of R500 000 was donated by Sappi this year to go towards furthering the studies of the young scholars.

Desilan Govender, Sindiswa Khuzwayo and Joshua Yuan received the award from the Mandeni branch, while Mahesh Naidoo, Samir Sahadeo and Lungelo Mzoneli were awarded from Stanger.
