R7 million skills centre for KwaDukuza

A R7 million centre will be built in Shakaville where 3000 youths will be trained in technical skills with a special focus on the construction industry.

Albert Luthuli’s daughter, Albertina and residents of KwaDukuza thanked the Sibaya Community Trust and Vivian Reddy Foundation for their contribution to skills development in the region at the sod turning of the Chief Albert Luthuli Skills Centre on Thursday, January 21.

Albertina said the project “certainly talked her father’s language”.

“My father was a passionate educator, he believed that education was one of the keys to liberating our people.”

Sibaya Casino chairman, Vivian Reddy said the R7 million centre will be built in Shakaville, outside the town of KwaDukuza. This will enable the training of about 3000 youth in technical skills with a special focus on the construction industry.

“We will provide training from grade 10 and there will be a range of courses including welding, bricklaying, electrical work, plumbing and computer and business studies,” said Reddy.

Reddy said the centre was due to be completed by April and management of the project will be undertaken by the Sibaya Community Trust and his foundation.

Sibaya Community Trust chairman, Tristan Kaatze said the unemployment crisis was reaching a critical point owing to the slow rate of development. Therefore the timing of the project was critical.

“It is important that the poor get opportunities to develop skills and this project provides just that. We are even happier that it seeks to provide job linkages – something that most of our youth are unable to do.”

KwaDukuza mayor, Ricardo Mthembu said that when it came to private the sector getting involved in community development many talk the talk, but few actually delivered.

“We take our hats off to you for your kindness and will do everything in our power to ensure this project succeeds. This is a very important venture and, as local government, we are fully behind it.”
