Teen drowns in school dam
A Shayamoya teen drowned in a dam near Shakaskraal Secondary School last week.
A 15-year-old girl from Shayamoya drowned in a dam near Shakaskraal Secondary School on Wednesday last week.
According to her older brother Skhosiphi Ndlovu, Mabuyi had told their younger brother that before going to school they must go and see the dam.
“When they got to the dam she decided to go swimming. Nkosikhona (14) joined her for few minutes, then got out. He said that he was waiting for her, but she just went down and did not come up again. He went up to the road to get help,” said Ndlovu
Mabuyi was a grade seven pupil at Shakaskraal SA Primary School.
One of her school teachers, Bheki Magwaza described her as a girl who did not like school, and was regularly absent.
“As a result of her attitude towards school, she was repeating grade seven,” said Magwaza.
According to an employee at Shakaskraal Secondary School, who wished to remain anonymous, children from Nkobongo and Shayamoya visit the dam almost every weekend.
“The dam was fenced but the fence was stolen, therefore the children have access to the dam anytime they want,” he said.
Apparently the dam belongs to Shakaskraal Secondary School. The school uses the dam to get water.
