His skin is bald and covered in open sores, bones sticking out, hovering in a corner, terrified of humans.
After three months of trying, Animally Haven‘s Gianna Scoulelis finally caught this poor dog, who she said is the worst case of abuse and neglect she has seen in 20 years.
“When I first spotted him in Shakaskraal, he looked quite healthy, with a beautiful dark coat. His condition drastically changed and he started losing his hair and weight.”
She suspects his owners may have moved away, leaving him to fend for himself.
“Every time I saw him, he deteriorated more. One day, his tail had been chopped off, leaving him with a bloody stump. No one cared to help him. Everyone just ignored him,” said Scoulelis, who runs an animal sanctuary near Glendale.
“My heart broke for him, but he was so terrified of humans, that I could not get close to him,”
Finally, with the help of a few others, she managed to catch him last week and take him to the Ballito Vet, where he has been treated.
“He is full of worms, ticks, fleas and mites. He is terribly under-nourished weighing only 12,7 kilograms, very anemic and has severe mange.”
Amazingly, despite is physical state, Scoulelis said he has a lot of spirit.
“While he is the worst physical case I have seen, he is luckily strong emotionally. He is very clever and is eating well. He will be ok.”
