Taxis are reportedly stationed at every robot in Tongaat, preventing anyone from leaving or entering the town.
Tongaat residents are battling to get to work as a result.
North Coast Courier receptionist Jolene Mosiah said she had to use a back-road to get to Ballito.
“We don’t know why the taxi’s are doing this, but they are stopping cars with more than one occupant” she said.
Mosiah said she suspected this was a protest against people using lift clubs.
In September last year taxi operators threatened to take matters into their own hands if the Department of Transport (DoT) did not regulate unlicensed lift club operators in the Tongaat area.
A probe into Tongaat’s lift clubs revealed that only one operator had a valid permit, the rest were all illegal operators.
However DoT’s Sbusisio Nhleko said lift clubs only needed a permit when they requested payment for their services.
We have not yet been able to confirm the reason for the blockade.
