A new adventure down under
Judy and Frank du Toit have left for Australia after a lifetime on the North Coast.
After 20 years in Ballito and a lifetime on the North Coast, Judy and Frank du Toit have packed their belongings to go to the land of kangaroos and koalas.
“I do not like the word emigrating, we are just relocating. I will be excited about the change when I am on the plane. For now, I am just stressed about getting everything done,” said Judy, whose father, Doug Lindsay, was the mayor of Stanger.
“We are joining our twin daughters – Jennifer and Anthea in Australia.”
Frank chuckled and said, “you know we were lucky, we got two for one with our girls.”
He opened the first Standard Bank in Stanger, made deputy mayor and was known for his regular letters in the North Coast Courier.
“The letters were always a family effort. I had the ideas, Judy made sure my English was up to scratch and Anthea checked that I did not say anything illegal. My letters were a great marketing campaign for my business. I think Bruce Stephenson – editor of the Courier – just thought I enjoyed complaining, but I actually did it as free advertising.”
The Du Toits will be spending their summers with Jennifer in Sydney and join Anthea on the Gold Coast during the colder months.
“We are looking forward to getting involved with our grandchildren, Cathrin and Alexandra. Australian schools make a big fuss about the grandparents.”
Having been surrounded by books all her life at the Stanger, Umhlali and lastly Ballito Libraries, Judy will continue to work with books as a volunteer at the city library and at the schools.
“My granddaughters will have to get me up to speed with technology, as I was lucky enough to have retired before computers really hit libraries. I am still trying to work out what this e-books story is all about. I want to try Kindle reading too.”
She said the Sydney library is very advanced, although it baffled her when they walk through the library ringing a school bell when they are about to close.
“It is supposed to be a quiet place,” she said with a look of disbelief.
While you are reading this, the couple are on their way to Sydney – Frank is enjoyong a romantic movie, while Judy is reading, of course.
