Workers on strike in Shaka’s Head
The staff set fire to a tyre, triggering rumours that they had set the factory alight.
Rumours that a factory in Imbonini Park in Shaka’s Head had been set alight by protesters this morning are unfounded.
The smoke that sparked fears that protest action had returned to the township was from the burning of a single tyre outside the gates of Boxer Meat factory.
The factory is temporarily closed as workers are on strike.
Wage negotiations with the almost 300-strong workforce appears to have broken down.
“We have not burned anything besides the tyre and we are striking peacefully,” said one of the workers, Sihle Ngcobo.
The police are at the factory, monitoring the strike.
