Youth celebrate freedom to enjoy their culture

"We are trying to set an example to other children in the community and show that we can have fun, with out alcohol and drugs but with our talents," said Sthembiso Myeni.

Freedom Day was celebrated with great joy and dance at Shaka’s Head community hall where school pupils used their talents to embrace their culture and send a strong message to other young people in the townships.

These young people, most of them school pupils from Shayamoya and Shaka’s Head, took the initiative to celebrate the day with Zulu dance, sketches and poetry.

“We are trying to set an example to other children in the community and show that we can have fun, with out alcohol and drugs but with our talents,” said Sthembiso Myeni.

Myeni is an 18-year-old grade 12 pupil at Guzane Primary School in Shayamoya.
