Rotary’s big three-oh!
Over the years, Ballito Rotary club has been involved in a number of outstanding projects.
The Ballito Rotary club took a well-deserved break from community service to celebrate 30 years of service in the Dolphin Coast on April 28.
The Ballito club is successor to the original Rotary club of Umhlali, chartered by the Empangeni Club April in 28,1986.
Over the years, the club has been involved in a number of outstanding projects, including setting up the Groutville Training Centre and Library (now known as the Luthuli Umfolozi College), as well as co-organising the annual Indian Ocean Marathon held over a period of ten years.
The Charter President of the Ballito club, Ken Lever said, “Our long term goal is to be more involved in the community and assist in the development of charity organisations. We currently have 16 members but we would like to increase our membership to approximately 25 to have more helping hands. We have identified particular needs withing the community such as the lack of government schools and clinics and we would like to work alongside the community to address these issues.”
Recently the club has raised funds for a purpose-built trailer for the North Coast Specialised Rescue Unit which should be on the road within the next two weeks.
Rotary Ballito continues to assist and support a number of schools and charitable organisations in the area, including Vision 153 and St Luke’s Home in Kearsney.
The club has been instrumental in obtaining wheelchairs for needy cases and in collaboration with the Empangeni club, have imported used bicycles from North America for distribution to working people.
Rotary Ballito is advantaged to be one of 96 Rotary clubs in District 9730 so the club has access to matching grant funds for larger projects from the district and from Rotary International.
Rotary Ballito is committed to serving the community in the broadest sense and assisting established and registered welfare and charity organisations.
They are always on the lookout for new members who are interested in helping the community. Contact Ken Lever at 082 657 0094 or John Coburn at 083 775 8405.
